Maths Work

Want to practise some extra maths? Click here for some fun games.

We do Big Maths every day to help us with our mental maths skills.

Can you remember our learn its?

10 + 0 = 10

9 + 1 = 10

8 + 2 = 10

7 + 3 = 10

6 + 4 = 10

5 + 5 = 10

The idea of Learn Its is that children can instantly recall the answer without having to work it out every time.

We have already learnt our doubles to 5.

At the moment we are practising...

  • Counting forward to 100
  • Counting backwards from 20
  • Counting in 10s forward to 120
  • Counting in 2s forwards to 24
  • Counting in 5s forwards to 60

Big Maths Characters

We will meet Pim in Big Maths soon!

How does Pim help us?

Pim helps us to remember that if we know

3 + 4 = 7

then

4 + 3 must = 7

We say MUST because we still have the same amount of hands! (or cubes or marbles or whatever)

Also

1 thing + 1 thing = 2 things

1 ten + 1 ten = 2 tens

10 + 10 = 20

How does Squiggleworth help us?

Squigleworth helps us with Place Value. He helps us to understand how much a digit in each column is worth.

For example if you had 52:

What's that squiggle of 2 worth? 2 units

What's that squiggle of 5 worth? 50

How do you know? It's a 5 in the tens column. 5 tens are 50.

In our Maths Activity time in October are learning about:

2D and 3D shape

Can you name all the shapes?

Is the yellow shape a triangle? Why? Why not? (It has 3 sides and 3 corners)

Which shape is the odd one out?

(I think it is the orange shape, because it has 4 sides and the triangles only have 3 sides.)

In our Maths Activity time in September are learning about:

Counting in 2s

How many socks are there? Can you count them in 2s?

Can you spot the mistake? 2 4 6 8 10 11 12

I am counting in 2s. If I start at 2, will I say the number 5?

Why or why not?

In our Maths Activity time in September are learning about:

Counting objects

Can you count out 18 objects?

How can you make sure you don't miss any out?

Can you count out a number more than 5 but less than 9?

Ordering numbers

Can you order numbers to 20? Past 20?

What is missing?   10  9  8  ___  6  ___  4

What is wrong with this sequence? 12  13  41  15  16

If I count forwards from 9, will I say 12? Prove it!
